WV History Bowl Championship

The day leading to the  championship for the History Bowl competition was a stressful one for our daughter.  She really wanted to  do good so she was stressing out and was working hard to  pack her brain with so much information.
We went  a day early  at Charleston so that  she could at least relax before the    day of the final competition.  We encouraged her to  have a good night sleep but I can tell that she did not sleep that long.  I know I couldn't sleep myself as well thinking about it, I was nervous for her.
Nevertheless, she was optimistic and hoping for the best.  This is the morning of the  competition.  We woke up early and had breakfast at the hotel and got ready to go to the venue.
I thought we arrived early but it seems like everybody was there already lol.  While waiting for the  competition to start, we had a lot of time to  spend for taking photos and  review some more.
I can tell that even though they were prepared, they were still anxious.
We sat by the corner and  reviewed their materials.
I am not sure if it's the nerve that kicking in but our daughter can't remember  some of the  information that she knew before  this day.
Since  the kids did not have a coach, the moms served as their coaches.
This was taken during the first elimination round.  They won and advanced to to the next round.  They scored 38 while the other school scored 20.
The school principal was there cheering them on also.
Below is the video of the first elimination round which was  set for ten minutes.  I was  so nervous that this video is so shaky lol.

They finished 9th place out of 24 teams so it wasn't a bad result.   Taking our son with us and watching the event  inspired him.  He said he wants to do it too when he's in 8th grade so we saved all of our daughter's study material.  All we have to do is update the political info next time if there are changes.  Our daughter said she would be will to help  coach.

Anti Bullying Poster Contest Winner

The Weirton-Wellsburgh Chapter of Credit Union  hosts the annual   Anti-Bullying Poster Contest for 5th graders.  Since my daughter is in fifth grade this year, she entered the said poster making contest.  She combined her passion for baking and  arts  and came up  with this  design.
I love that the  principal and the  fifth grade student's teacher   also attended the event.  It goes to show how supportive they are to their students.
IN my  daughter's school, her  design was the winner but there were also great entries that the board couldn't pass on so they chose four of them to be runners-up.
Only St. Joseph has 5 winners.    The public schools has one winner and other catholic school has one winner and a runner up.
We went early so we had the chance to take some pictures.
We decided to sit in one table  along with the other parents and students from St. Joe's.
The awarding ceremony was held in Holiday Inn and they served a buffet dinner.
The kids had so much fun while we were waiting for the ceremony to start.
The  city mayor was also there and gave a speech.
The principal to  the other catholic school was also there and a representative to the  Hancock public school was also present.
The kids in the front row are the winners from 6 different schools and the kids at the back are the runners-up.
A pose with the mayor and the  head for the credit union.
With their teacher, Mrs. Fuscardo.

A photo taken at the Holiday Inn lobby.
Rylie received $100 cash gift and a certificate.  The runners-up also received a certificate and $25 cash gift.   I am not really sure if this is a certificate as I have never seen a certificate without a signature but it is something she can  add to her  personal  accomplishment.
This campaign is very dear to my heart because I experienced bullying when I was a kid and that's something I don't want my kids to experience.

Reaching for the Stars

My daughter took home a Smart529 form last week. Smart529 is a our state's college savings plan and they always host an essay writing contest for every students in West Virginia to participate to. I always encourage my kids top send in an entry even though the chance of winning is very slim. This gives them an avenue to express their creativity towards writing. This year's topic is about what they want ot be when they grow up. A perfect topic to have them start thinking about their future. This is a chance for them to jot down their thoughts on what they want to be. My daughter is only 8 years old so she does not much of an experience on how to write a good essay so a website like promptessay.com can really be a good help for an aspiring writer like my daughter.
The essay writing contest is dubbed as "Reaching for the Stars".  The grand prize is five thousand dollars and they can use it towards their school expenses.  We saw an update of this on TV  yesterday morning.  The contest committee said that they  don't have a lot of entry due to snow days where most schools were closed for so many days.  This prompted our daughter to start writing her entry and hopefully we could send it in before  the due date  comes.

Nature Play at its Best

My previous post about how fun raking leaves can be, has won 10th place from the Parents and Play contest that was sponsored by the Kaboom.org. You may see their post about it in this url. http://kaboom.org/blog/nature_play_its_best . Kaboom is an organization that promotes the importance of play in children's overall growth. If you are a parent and you want to be involve with their programs, check them out.
But anyhow, below is a ballerina ornament we bought for our daughter last year. She wasn't dancing yet then, she just started this summer. We buy each of our kids something every year so that when we are putting up our Christmas tree, it would remind them of the previous years.
Thank you for visiting
