The kids have been taking Jui-Jitsu for three months now and they seemed to like it. I am glad that they do because this would help her defend themselves in intense situation when someone will try to attack them. This also helps the children self discipline and a really good form of exercise in general.
Last night was a fight night and our young lady fought three of them. My husband said he wasn't sure why the coach let her fight again and again and then towards the end, they realized that the coach rewarded her her first stripe in her belt. That was a nice treat for her because she got embarrassed when she got paired with one of the bigger kids and slammed her face on the mat.
These two are so competitive with each other so it made my son feel a bit sad that he didn't get promoted like she did. We told him that he might get his some other time and to just keep doing it.
Our daughter follows direction to a T, she is like her Dad who goes with direction by the book, that's probably helped her a lot.
Our son is a carefree, happy-go-lucky boy so sometimes, he forgets that you have to follow certain and specific .rules in doing things.
Nevertheless, I am so proud of both of them for sticking into this kind of martial arts. With how crazy the world we live in is becoming into, it is advantageous to know some type of self defense and this would help them to do that.
We attended the sports banquet at Holiday Inn on May 12. It was my daughter's first time attending as we didn't attend last year. She wanted to attend last year but we couldn't because of our move and other conflict in schedule. This year, I asked her if she wants to attend and she said no but I signed her up anyway because I wanted her to experience it.
The food was catered by Undo's Restaurant.
They were given their certificate. My daughter only played volleyball so that's the only sport she was part of for the ceremony. I was encouraging her to try the track but she seem so unsure about it so I didn't push the issue. Maybe next year, she will try it. She told me that she wants to go with me on my jog this summer so she would be ready for next year so we will see. We actually went for a morning run today (Memorial Day) and I think she did good. If we keep up with the training, she will build her endurance and I think she can do track next year.
Some of her friends will be attending the volleyball camp this summer but she didn't want to do it.
My son's friend was there at the banquet too and she sat with us.
After the awarding ceremony and dinner, players are allowed to stay and dance. We gave our daughter a little freedom and left her with her friends even though she was not sure if she would want to stay or not.
She said she did not really enjoy it so she said she won't be staying for the dance next year. It was nice going there though, she get the chance to be with her friends. Dancing is my son's kind of fun but not my daughter but I still wanted her to experience it. Our son will be part of it next year so maybe he could stay and be with her sister. We will see.,
Football season is going to start soon. I am bummed that we didn't get to enroll the kids for the spring season of tennis. Maybe we would be able to do it this Fall, we will see.
My husband works at Industrial Scientific, the leading provider of gas detection service and portable gas detectors. I love that they are family -oriented and that they value each employee and their families. Every year, they host a "Take Your Children to Work" day to commemorate the Workers Memorial Day.
Workers Memorial Day is celebrated to remember those workers who have suffered and died on the job. Industrial Scientific aims to educate the children of what the company stands for and the importance of the services and products that they provide to people and companies. This event also gives the children a glimpse of what their parents do on a day to day basis.
My husband showed the kids all the different kinds of gas detectors. The company building is humongous. They used to have different offices but now they have a new building built where they can all work together as a whole.
Before we went to the orientation area, my husband took us to the place where he works and we met some of his co-workers.
The registration was on the top of the building. Every child was given a gift pack, snacks, and materials that they need during the sessions. Before the activities starts, the CEO did a speech and ask questions where the children are encourage to participate. It was nice.
Our children was not interested in attending last year but this year, they were definitely on board.
The set-up in the lobby reminds me of Google Complex, it's very modern.
Just by sitting in the lobby, you will learn what the company is all about because they have a huge TV and it displays all about the mission, vision, and services of Industrial Scientific.
Parents were not allowed to be with the children so my husband gave me a tour inside the building. It also gave me a chance to take photos where it is allowed.
I was trying to sneak and see what the children were up to. I can't help but take some photos where they at.
Every child was given a clip board and the people in charge posted clues or situation on the wall and they have to evaluate whether the situation is safe or not.
I am glad that both of our children were participating, they learned new things and they also have the chance to be with other children.
After all the activities, the answers of every child was tabulated by a group of IT's and their scores are displayed on the white board on the lobby. The highest score is 42 and both of them got it.
It was a special day not just for our children but for all of us. The kids said that they will definitely attend again next year if given a chance. I am grateful for the company for hosting this event.
The school year is almost over, we have few more weeks left and the kids will be on break from school. My husband has one week left with his schooling this semester and I can't wait till he finished all of the stuff that he need to do for his finals. I can tell how stressed he is dealing with all of the projects and other requirements. He still have one semester left before finishing his master's degree and I'll be glad when he graduate already. Anyway, back to the summer break, it is important to keep the children busy when they are off from school so their brain are constantly engage with stuff. Reading is one of the activities that we do during summer.
I am happy to have these great books from Wisdom Tales . All of their books are full of valuable life lessons and the illustrations are just beautiful. We have a collection of some of their greatest books written by different well-known authors and illustrators. The Rock Maiden is a beautiful story of love, devotion, and faith of a wife whose husband was lost at sea during a storm. It is a Chinese Tale of Love and Loyalty written by Natasha Yim and illustrated by Pirkko Vainio.
The Rock Maiden is a story based on an old Chinese legend. The real rock is called the Amah Rock, a natural rock formation shaped amazingly like a woman with a baby on her back. The author wanted to have a happy ending on this story so she re- envisioned the story with a happy ending. I won't spoil you with the details, you have to read it to appreciate the whole story but I highly recommends it. I am sure your children would love to read this book. It is appropriate for children ages 4 and up. You can buy it for $17.95 though the link I have provided above.
The Princess and the Six Swans is another beautiful story as well. It is a tale from the Brother's Grimm which is retold and illustrated by Kim Jacobs. The story is about a young spirited heroine Princess named Sophie who carried the loyalty too far that her powerful stepmother turned her six brothers into swans. She had the task to save her her brothers from the spell that their stepmom have cast on them.
I love the complexity of the story, the twist and turn will make you feel like you are watching a movie. Children would absolutely love this book as it has that magical fantasy that would surely captivate any kid's attention.
I saved the best for last because this book satisfies my curiosity and admiration about Native Americans. I only see them in movies and wishes that I would know more about them so this book is perfect. It contains the Indian voices on nature,. Sometimes I have to reread the phrases to understand the interconnectedness of all things. It's amazing how the Indians relate things to nature. It is fascinating to me.
I love all the photos that were inside the book. Joseph Bruchac did a wonderful job in conveying the messages. I haven't finished reading this book but so far, I love all the phrases that Indian people used to talk to nature. If there is one thing I would be given a chance to do, I would choose to live in an Indian community to fully understand their ways of living, it is so interesting and very unique.

This year's volleyball season went so fast. They started the game on the first week of March and today will be their last game. Unlike last year, all the games this season was held in Bishop John King Muscio. I liked last season because we got to have the game here in our school but this year was different. Nevertheless, it still fun and it is more intense as they advance in grades.
Our school have two teams, the white and the blue. Our daughter is on the white team. They played against the blue team on the first game. The blue team won but it did not stop the white team from winning some games against the other school's team. So far they have played 7 games, they lost 3 and today will be their last game.
Our daughter got some scrapes and bruises during the last game last week but that's not stopping her from participating on today's game.
She's kind of disappointed that they lost three games but we told her that it is part of playing team sports. She got used to last season where they never experience a loss.
The best deal here is that, she gets to learn lessons such as working together to achieve a common goal and that she gets to experience how it is to handle defeat. In life, you will not win with all your battles but the most important thing to remember is to learn from that experience no matter the outcome is.
The camaraderie in sports is what the most important lesson these young athletes could learn. It is not easy to work in teams but if you want to achieve a common goal, you will learn how to work together.
Another new this year was their uniform. They have long sleeves shirts unlike the jersey they wore last year. I thought that having their own shirt instead of using the school sports uniform is better as they get to keep the shirt after the season is over.
Next season, they will have to play with the teams that they played last season. This year, they played with the new batch of players from the lower grades. Volleyball is the only sports my daughter love. She never really got interested in other sports which is okay with me because having so many sports at the same time is quite difficult. Volleyball and piano is what she is involved in.
I was looking forward to the Tennis this Spring but the coaches never sent out an info so I am guessing that they did not have it this Spring. We do however play it as a family, we all love playing tennis. We are also doing Jui-Jitsu as a family. We started it this month and so far we are enjoying it. Hubby and I get to do it together and the kids get to do it too. Self defense is something I really want all of us to learn especially the kids. Hopefully, we can stick to it and fully learn it.
